I love that I can go just a few feet from my door and catch a panoramic vista of building storms. Its a nice perk to living on a rise in these rolling hills in the Kettle Moraine. Its a nice perk of finally having spring/summer like weather where the setting sun reveals the beautiful contours the clouds have that are often missed in the glaring sunlight of the midday. I feel privileged to catch a glimpse of these one of a kind paintings.

Thousands of souls hurtle through the heavens overhead. As a kid and as a teenager and as an adult I have stared up with wonder as to the destinations these trails have lead. Now my piqued curiosity can afford itself answers with the advent of technology. In one app on my phone I can query “aircraft overhead” and it shows my path, declination, speed and flight number. Then with a flight app I can then type in the flight number and see where these travellers departed and where their flight takes them. 6 year old me and 33 year old me admit that that is pretty darn cool.

As the weather has warmed up, I’ve noticed an increasing number of ants traipsing precarious paths across the screen and outside the window on the narrow sill. I drew open the infrequently opened shade to let in some of the first needed sunlight of the season. I saw, strewn between the panes, a holocaust of formicidae. Scattered like spots of pepper were actually discarded heads, abdomens and thoraxes. What vile creature wrought such havoc? It was when I investigated further and looked down at my feet that I saw even further carnage. I moved a wastebasket to find hidden beneath it another killing field. Hanging above it was the guardian of deaths door itself. A spider, presiding over his slaughter. It was a moment both revolting and relieving knowing that this creepy sentinel singularly staved off an invasion. Meeting my gaze eye to eye to eye to eye to eye we gave one another an affirmative nod and I gave the valiant arachnid a stay of execution provided he resumed his outdoor post.

Our flu’s and rotoviruses and our pneumonia’s are planning their summer vacations.
On these vacations they’re gonna hook up with some exotic tail and freshen up just enough so that when they come back next year and take up residence in our body they’ll have changed just enough that our immune system won’t recognize it right away until it begins to wreak havoc.

For a loop.

Time travel as a plot has been around since “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court”. H.G. Wells imagined that time it could be travelled and shortly after Albert Einstein came up with the math to postulate that it was a possibility.
Since then we’ve seen time travel depicted in pop culture, from under the radar books like “Replay” to its spiritual cinematic, comedic counterpart “Groundhog Day” to quasi sci-fi dystopias such as “12 monkeys”. A few years ago Denzel Washington had a passably entertaining time travel flick with “Déjà vu”.
The elements and processes of time travel are debatable, ranging from inherent paradoxes of even setting a single step into the past, as Ray Bradbury masterfully scripted in “A Sound of thunder”, (skip the movie version, it’s horrible) to the fantastically built short story “All you mutants…” by Heinlein.

What Looper has coming before it are stories of a plot element that ranges from the awful, with a film like “Time cop”, to the beautiful, where time was depicted as a tidal ocean in the phenomenal novel “All of an Instant” by Richard Garfinkle.

Looper was beautiful. It was simple in its aesthetic and not in your face sci-fi. It is accessible to casual and hard core genre fans. There were a few predictable elements that were setup nicely and the payoff was done in a way that didn’t leave unanswered questions to the audience. The time travel was an easily explained concept and the consequences of interacting with the past were dealt with in fairly realistic ways and dealt with paradoxes cleverly and the movie wasn’t reduced to a deus ex machina plot resolution.

For anyone wanting to see it, I definitely recommend it. A well told emotional story with few weak spots. Being that it centered on organized crime using time travel for illegal gains the movie was a bit bloody and had some sexual overtones without being explicit.

Ultimately, it was a crime story about a gangster with a heart trying to undo wrong. Time travel was a just the element used to make this not another gangster drama.

It lived up to its precedents and delivered entertainment.
